I have been a ful-time photographer since 1968. I started photographing urban images for New York newspapers as a freelancer. I moved to California in 1969, and became Park Photographer for Yosemite National Park in 1971. This sparked an interest in large-format landscape images due to the influence of Ansel Adams, whom I met in Yosemite. Later I moved to Berkeley, and had a photography studio there for about fifteen years. I did magazine covers, the Port of Oakland’s photography, many record albums and a Grateful Dead poster, book covers, and also made printing plates for lithographic printing, for many great Bay Area artists through Magnolia Editions.
In 1989 I moved to Point Reyes, and a few years later, published the first book done on the National Seashore in forty years, Point Reyes Visions. It was a instant best seller, and is widely known. Then I quit doing assignments! Other books that I have designed and created with my partner, Katheen Goodwin, include California Trip, the Point Reyes Visions Guidebook, and Visions of Marin.
Recently I had 37 images in the Asian Art Museum show on Bali. I also had a piece in SF Museum of Modern Art’s exhibit, Dispatches from the Archives. Other museums who have acquired or have shown my work include the Brooklyn Museum, the Palace of Fine Arts, the De Rosa Preserve, the Peabody Museum, and the Oakland Museum.
I have just finished a new book of black and white landscapes of California, called California Dreaming. It is a homage to the great f64 photographers like Adams, Edward Weston, and Wynn Bullock. It is available signed at Open Studios for a discount! I just visited Ansel Adam’s darkroom in Carmel in conjunction with the publication!
