Bruce Mitchell

Bruce Mitchell has been creating objects from wood for over four decades. During a formative, eight year apprenticeship with wood sculptor J.B. Blunk, Bruce acquired the skills and techniques to make a range of works that were focused primarily on hand-carved vessel forms. After teaching himself how to use a wood lathe in the late 1970’s, Bruce began to develop vessel forms that incorporated combinations of concentric and carved elements. As the carving evolved, Bruce began making tables, stools and other forms using chainsaws and other power-carving tools. Today his work manifests an aesthetic that draws upon experience, instinct and intuition to discover an intrinsic shape within the raw material that relates to its own unique personality.
