Stoneware pottery and paperclay sculpture

My present work is in stoneware and paperclay consisting of functional and sculptural pieces, including figurative work. The functional work consists of large bowls and vases and small serving pieces, all thrown on a potter's wheel. Unique stoneware garden vessels are made using thrown pieces that are finished with a small amount of hand work. Figurative pieces are formed from paperclay slabs.

My bowls and serving pieces are thrown using a mid-range stoneware or porcelain body; all are decorated with food safe glazes, but they are not to be used on a stove top nor placed into a hot oven.

The vases are made with the same clay and glazes and may be used outside unless the temperature may fall below freezing.

The tripod garden vessels are formed from a more open body, which means that they will absorb and transfer a little water, so they shouldn't be used inside unless they're placed on a waterproof surface or in some type of protective saucer. The three feet are open at the bottoms to allow for draining and the small footprint means a smaller covered surface area on your deck.

Paper clay, a combination of clay and paper pulp, is a fairly recent addition to the ceramic spectrum. It's ideal for the fabrication of large sculpture pieces due to its workability. The lighter weight of the finished pieces is ideal for large wall pieces. Paper clay pieces have the same appearance as those made from conventional clay and may be used inside or outside. I'll be happy to speak with you about its qualities and uses.

Please call or email me if you'd like to see my work in my studio at times other than Open Studio tours.

A small selection of my work is on display and for sale at Pelican Studio, 233 San Anselmo Ave in San Anselmo CA.

  • Temple bells
These bells are modeled after Chinese temple bells. They are pit fired so the clay is not vitrified, resulting in a soft bass tone rather than a ringing sound. These are 5" in height, 4" wide, with 6" and 7" bells also available, individualy or in sets.
