Marty Knapp: Biographical Notes Marty Knapp was born 1947 in coastal Connecticut. He received his formal education at Tufts University in Massachusetts. In 1968 he moved to California and in 1973 he settled in the village of Point Reyes Station. There, the beautiful vistas of the California coast have continued to inspire his work. In 1986 he began a series of black & white photographs featuring dramatic moments of light in and around Point Reyes wilderness. More recently he has photographed the Oregon Coast, the California desert and the Southwest plateau. Marty’s primary camera is a Horseman 985, a 6x9 view camera that previously belonged to the great American photographer, Peter Stackpole. His images have been widely published, appearing in Terry Hope’s The World’s Top Photographers: Landscape; Jules Evens’ Natural History of Point Reyes Peninsula; and Kaufman & Zaleski’s Gifts of the Spirit. Marty's first book, Point Reyes 20 Years, was published by Mt. Vision Press in 2007. It features 43 of his most evocative images of the Point Reyes Seashore area along with his self-authored essays documenting his experiences making these photographs. In 2007 his book received a bronze medal for photography by the Independent Publisher Book Awards in their 2007 national competition. Today, in his Point Reyes studio, Marty makes gelatin silver prints in the time-honored tradition of the great American landscape photographers who preceded him. He handcrafts each photograph from original film negatives in his classic black & white darkroom. His current work explores form and light in a smaller and more intimate landscape. Marty’s limited-edition prints are in public, corporate and private collections world-wide, including Fireman’s Fund, Fair Isaac, and the National Park Service. In 1999, he was named honored artist, representing the 6th District, California State Senate, in the California Contemporary Art Collection. His work may be viewed and purchased online at www.martyknapp.com, or at the Marty Knapp Photo Gallery in Point Reyes Station, California.
