Getting to know the Point Reyes National Seashore was for me like coming home. I was born in South Africa and lived there until I was a young adult. After I moved to the Bay Area, I missed South Africa?s wide open spaces. Then I discovered the Point Reyes National Seashore. It filled a need to rest my eyes on expansive beauty. There were trails where I could walk for miles with frequent opportunities to observe animals and birds living in their natural habitat. Painting and photographing in West Marin is a pleasure and privilege I really value. I paint both on location and in the studio using watercolor, oils, acrylics and pastels. I enjoy the intensity of watercolors, knowing that surprises are part of the process. The beauty of watercolors, the way the paint moves on the paper fascinates and challenges me and keeps me exploring the medium. The simplicity of the tools needed for watercolors makes it possible to paint spontaneously when traveling or on a hike. This adds tremendously to the experience and often leads to interesting adventures. My influences include Japanese wood block prints and Georgia O'Keefe. I once spent three days sketching (midst crowds of people) the work of Hiroshige and Hokusai at the Asian Museum in San Francisco. I make archival pigment prints of my paintings and photographs. I often use the original as a starting point for further exploration of color tone and value. With watercolors, the original often has a softer subtler quality while the print tends to be more vibrant and more graphic. Kathleen Goodwin is the author and publisher of Point Reyes Visions, the acclaimed book on Point Reyes. She and her partner, Richard Blair, have also published a new book, the Point Reyes Visions Guidebook, which includes 60 black and white photographs, descriptions of hikes, suggestions for picnic spots and a waterproof color map of trails in the Point Reyes National Seashore.
